Particle Characterization in Environmental Applications

Coagulation/Flocculation

Particle Characterization during Coagulation / FlocculationTask:  Monitor the changes in particle size and concentration in real-time during a coagulation and flocculation process.

Sample: Kaolin clay dosed with alum, mixed rapidly for one minute then permitted to flocculate.

Run Conditions: The mixing chamber was sampled directly during the reaction and the results were compiled at two minute intervals.  Images were stored at 10 second intervals.

Analysis: The concentration dropped from 750,000 particles per ml to 50,000 particles per ml over a 30 minute period.  Representative images illustrate the formation and character of floc produced.
