Particle Analysis in Environmental Applications

Particle Removal

Task: Profile a conventional drinking water treatment plant in terms of suspended particulates and particle removal effectiveness.

Sample: River water (drinking water treatment plant source), settled water (granular media filter influent), and filter effluent.

Run Conditions: Samples were analyzed at magnification 5x and 14x.  Particle diameter and concentration were measured.  Particle images were stored.  Turbidity and online particle counter readings were recorded.

Analysis: Removal of particles >1µm (raw water vs. filtered water) was found to be 98.07%.  Particle counts were found to be consistently 5 to 6 times greater than those recorded by the online particle counters.
