Particulate Analysis in Environmental Applications

UV Disinfection

Particle Characterization in Untreated River WaterTask: Characterize suspended particulate in raw water in order to correlate particle size, shape, transparency, and concentration to UV disinfection efficacy.

Sample: Untreated river water.  No dilution.

Run Conditions: Sample was analyzed at magnification 5x and 10x.  Diameter, concentration, and morphological characteristics of suspended particulate were measured.  Images were stored once every 20 seconds during the analysis.

Analysis: The concentration of particles >2µm in diameter was found to be 163,979/ml spanning 1µm to 330.8µm.  An additional 108,792 particles/ml were found to be between 1µm and 2µm in size.  19% of the total particle population was larger than 5µm, 9% larger than 10µm, and 3% larger than 20µm.
