Particulate Analysis in Life Sciences Applications
Kidney Cells
Task: Characterization of mammalian cell membrane integrity after ethanol treatment.
Sample: Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells. Cells were prepared in a PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) solution. Part of the sample was diluted to a 70% (by volume) ethanol solution.
Run Conditions: 5x magnification. The cells were analyzed for size, concentration, and transparency.
Analysis: Live cells are 10-15µm with a mean transparency of 160 units. Lysed cells are 4-12 microns with a mean transparency of 195 units. A plot comparing transparency vs. size discriminates the two populations.
