Particle Analysis in Life Sciences

Neural Cells

Task: Isolate and characterize nuisance algae present within a drinking water reservoir.

Sample: Water from a drinking water reservoir at a point in time known through manual microscopic analysis to be susceptible to large quantities of Asterionella.

Run Conditions: Samples were analyzed at magnification 5x and 14x. Particle diameter, circularity, and concentration were measured. Particle images were stored.

Analysis: A variety of sizes and circularities were evident depending on the Asterionella formation. Single branch formations were approximately 20µm in equivalent circular diameter with a circularity of 0.44. Those with two, three, and four branches were sized at 30µm, 40µm, and 50µm with circularities of 0.33, 0.28, and 0.27 respectively.
