Particulate Analysis in Life Science Applications
Red Blood Cells
Task: Investigate size and morphology changes to red blood cells as a function of storage time and temperature.
Sample: Whole blood stored in a BD Vacutainer with EDTA and diluted with saline (0.85% NaCI) . One sample stored at room temperature and the other at 4°C for a period of 14 days.
Run Conditions: 14x magnification. The cells were analyzed for size, shape, concentration, and transparency.
Analysis: Red blood cells were isolated from contamination using a 4-8µm size filter. Cells were isolated from consistent orientation using an aspect ratio filter (0.775-0.825). Neither size nor shape was found to vary significantly regardless of storage temperature over the 14 day period.
