NewsBrightwell's Dave Thomas Invited to Speak at AAPS Annual ConferenceAtlanta, GA - November 16th to 20th, 2008 Mr. Thomas will be part of a symposium session titled Particle Formation in Protein Therapeutics: Mechanisms & Characterization at the Annual Meeting and Exposition of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (AAPS). The session takes place on Thursday, November 20th from 8:30-11:30 am. Mr. T The focus of Mr. Thomas' talk will be the use of imaging-based technologies such as Brightwell's Micro-Flow Imaging (MFI) for characterizing particles in biopharmaceuticals. The latest research results and applications will be cited. The complete description of the symposium is: The prevention of particle formation in parenteral protein dosage forms is a key concern that needs to be addressed during formulation development. Success in this pursuit is essential from a patient safety and regulatory perspective. The need for high-concentration protein formulations has further increased the importance of understanding, and preventing particle formation. Excipients must be selected recognizing that they can influence protein properties and in turn particle formation. Biophysical tools that probe conformational and colloidal properties can be particularly useful to address these issues. With respect to particle detection, light-scattering and visual imaging techniques cover the wide range of particle sizes, from nanometers to hundreds of micrometers, observed in protein formulations. Recent developments in these fields may allow for improved sensitivity for detection in high-concentration formulations and characterization. Used in combination with other biophysical tools, these techniques can provide useful insight into the underlying mechanisms governing particle formation. In this symposium we bring together academic and industrial perspectives on the research and characterization methodologies employed in addressing the particulation problem.
